Systems of crop rotation developed to avoid impoverishment of the soil have long been empirically practised in many parts of the world. With the availability of cheap nitrogenous fertilizers these practices tended to be replaced by monocrop systems, but the steep rise in the price of such fertilizers since 1973 has revived interest in rotations including nitrogen-fixing legumes, especially in the less wealthy countries.
