Lupins have been grown as a food and fodder crop since prehistoric times, but never very extensively. Dehiscent pods which scatter the seed; impermeable seed coats which cause dormancy; and production of toxic alkaloids have all been inherent disadvantages. In recent years, however, reliable varieties free from these defects have been developed and this has led to increased interest in the crop, especially as it is relatively undemanding in its fertility requirements.
