The rearing of fish in enclosures is an age-old method of increasing and varying human diet, especially in Asia. Only comparatively recently, however, has this been seriously considered as a large-scale commercial venture. In this context the tilapia, indigenous to Africa, has characteristics that make it of particular interest to fish-farmers in developing countries.
