This article reviews the conservation, evaluation, and utilization of the enormous genetic resources in rice for the welfare of the world's 1.5 billion rice consumers and another 450 million people who depend on rice as a secondary staple. Potentials in the genetic resources for future use and areas for endeavour are also discussed.
