Perennial pasture establishment poses particularly difficult problems when it is associated with common grazing tradition. Grazing management of perennial varieties requires light browsing on the shrubs at a rate roughly equivalent to their average annual growth. Annual pasture species offer a more realistic opportunity for revegetation and improvement of arid and semi-arid regions because their introduction would require less change to the current socio-economic environment.
