It is widely recognized that, in many crop situations, the use of herbicides instead of tillage confers advantages, not least of which is the control of erosion. On the other hand, simplified cultivation is not always reliable, and for a number of reasons zero tillage is not yet used extensively. Further research is needed to widen the applicability of these techniques, and the rate of adoption depends on motivating factors whose importance may differ from one country to another.
