Abstract
Seven years ago UN Secretary-General U Thant called for a different kind of academic institution – one which would devote itself exclusively to problems of human and social development such as hunger, environmental decay and the ever-widening gulf between the world's rich and poor. The result has been the Tokyo-based UN University which has addressed itself to such problems by the creation of a series of international multi-disciplinary research networks.
