The ‘art’ of banking is an indefinable area steeped in subjective judgement and personal relationships. Though a significant amount of money is lent in this way, ‘scientific’ lending is probably more important and the balance struck between the two is unique in each transaction. Scientific borrowing aims to increase output and profit, reduce risk or improve working conditions, or increase the size of the enterprise, but the banker wants proof of management ability.
