With the world's forest lands rapidly declining in area the forester looks to the geneticist and the seed orchardist to supply seed from trees which are genetically superior in growth and quality. It is in these areas that the experimental use of gibberellins* has been most successful. Economically important species of conifers which naturally take 10–20 years to flower, and may need another twenty years to produce significant quantities of seed, have been induced to flower in 4–6 years.
