Abstract
Sugar cane growth can be improved under experimental conditions by the use of chemicals at almost any stage of development. Effects range from increased germination and tillering to control of ripening. Higher sucrose yields have followed inhibition of flowering by commercial applications of herbicides such as MH, monuron, diuron and diquat; stalk elongation with gibberellins; and control of ripening with a variety of compounds, the most effective of which, to date, is glyphosine.
