Difficulties arise principally where cereals, particularly winter wheat, follow cereals, and extra nitrogen is necessary to ensure yields comparable with those following traditional cultivations. Winter wheat and barley can be successfully direct-drilled after sugar beet, potato, legumes, rape and maize, and other applications of the technique show promise.
