The environmental effects of innovative technology in agriculture, whether in the wake of fertilizer practice, crop protection or changes in farming systems have received, over the past ten years, the attention which, in retrospect, should have been accorded them in earlier decades. Laboratory and small-plot techniques have been devised which can give early warning of undesirable effects, while field observations over a number of years monitor the possibility of long-term problems arising.
