Action by OEEC/OECD since 1954, and by EEC from 1966, has led to important developments in seed certification and control. Procedures vary from country to country but basically they require: the existence of statutory or recommended lists of varieties, with descriptions; a Certifying Authority which conducts field inspections, plot comparisons and laboratory testing for purity, etc; regulation of the number of generations from basic or pre-basic seed; and adequate documentation.
