The big expansion in the total area of the three major cereals which has taken place in England and Wales since the beginning of the second World War has resulted in a more than doubling of straw production but without a corresponding increase in utilization. Roughly half the straw that is produced is now burnt or ploughed in. A number of potential industrial uses for this surplus are considered and some of the remaining problems that need to be overcome are briefly outlined.
