Country average yields of maincrop potatoes are far lower than the theoretically possible maximum. Investigations at a Yorkshire Experimental Station have demonstrated what can be done by removing known limitations. Application of these findings on commercial farms has not been invariably successful, but the work raises the question whether future research, e.g. in plant breeding, should be conducted under optimum conditions instead of at lower levels of production.
