Sugar cane is a crop which most people associate with tropical areas and large stretches of flat land. It is rather surprising therefore to find that, despite the extreme latitude—well south of the Tropic of Capricorn—sugar cane is one of South Africa's most important crops, and that much of it is grown on the rolling and often steep lands of coastal Natal. The crop has many interesting features.
