Abstract
The development of profitable intensive grassland farming systems has continued since this farm was acquired by ICI in 1946 to the point at which its 390 farmable acres (158 ha) now carry 330 milking cows, 45 double-suckling beef cows, 50 fattening cattle and 180 replacement heifers. Despite the ecological impact that such intensification must have, it is possible, given forethought and planning, to maintain a sensible balance between economic and environmental requirements.
