Swedes are traditionally grown in Wales for “folding off” by lambing ewes in winter and early spring. The main problems are shortage of labour, occurrence of annual weeds and reluctance to plough grass early enough to obtain a good seedbed for early sowing. Breconshire experience suggests that these may be overcome by direct drilling following application of paraquat provided due attention is given to timing, choice of variety, correct fertilizer treatment and other factors.
