The export of crops on a world market which is tightening quality standards and the need for more foodstuffs to feed expanding populations, emphasize the importance of protecting from pests all produce from the growing phase through to consumption by man and animals. The special range of environmental conditions in the tropics and sub-tropics calls for an integration of the roles of the scientist, technologist, sociologist, economist and administrator. Scientific studies are not enough.
