A small laboratory ecosystem has been developed to study the biodegradability of pesticides. This simulates the application of pesticides to crop plants and the eventual contamination of an aquatic environment with several food chains. Radio-labelled pesticides are used together with thin layer chromatography to isolate and measure the metabolic products in the various organisms of the system. Results can be given in terms of ecological magnification and biodegradability index.
