Pollution of rivers and lakes has deservedly attracted a great deal of attention in recent years. It has been claimed that the use of fertilizers on agricultural land has resulted in an alarming rise in nitrate content, producing algal blooms and threatening the safety of domestic water supplies. While no responsible citizen would oppose the adoption of a watchful attitude towards the eutrophication of inland waters, the facts—in Britain, at least—do not warrant an alarmist view.
