Abstract
One of the largest piggeries in the world is the “Kombinat” at Oltenita, Rumania. It is a fully integrated and entirely independent pig community housing about 6,000 breeding sows, 270 boars, 30,000 pigs from birth to weaning and 40,000 fattening pigs—about 76,000 pigs in all. 300 fat pigs leave daily, and 30 sows farrow, averaging 11 born alive and 10 reared to weaning. Interest centres on the veterinary arrangements on which commercial feasibility depends.
