Although land drainage is commonly regarded as a purely engineering operation, there is in fact an important contribution from the field of applied physics. Not only does the soil physicist provide a theoretical basis for many of the principles that serve to guide the drainage engineer, he—the physicist—is often able to supply essential information in relation to specific projects. These contributions are illustrated by reference to a project in the Lake Mariyut area in Egypt.
