The composition of the solution formed on dissolution of the fertilizer in the soil is a major factor in the reaction of the phosphate with the soil minerals. Orthophosphates are rapidly precipitated in the soil, but the polyphosphates form precipitates much more slowly. The hydrolysis of the polyphosphates to orthophosphates further complicates the behaviour of the polyphosphates, and much additional study will be required for evaluation of the polyphosphates as fertilizers.
