The introduction into Britain and the early development of the vacuum compression method of making silage presented an almost unique opportunity for the evaluation of the extension techniques used. The problem was a discrete one, and the conditions in the early stages were such that most of the relevant information on the development was both canalized and available. The value of field demonstrations is clearly revealed.
