Although improved yield is a prime consideration in the breeding of new crop varieties, it is by no means the only one. In herbage crops the plant breeder is confronted with a variety of targets, from which he must select the most important, paying due attention to the feasibility of attaining them with the genetic material and facilities available to him. Not least important are improved yields of animal products—an additional complication in an already complex field.
