Abstract
The retreat of agriculture as soils become saline is a common sight in Iraq, Pakistan and China in areas of semi-aridity. Comprehensive irrigation, with drainage, can offer a solution, but not quickly or cheaply. In describing what can be done in extremity, by studied cultural means, the authors of this article, which is based on practical experience, focus attention on the problem, and show that marginal reduction in salt content in some soils can often ensure a fair crop.
