Some consequences of the peculiar anatomical arrangements of the digestive tract in ruminants were discussed by Balch [4] in Outlook, II, 33, 1958. They pose special problems relating to the regulation of voluntary intake. The article describes an experimental investigation into aspects of the subject and attempts to incorporate the results into the general body of relevant knowledge. The voluntary intake of food is often the main factor limiting animal production.
