In the bipyridylium herbicides I.C.I. have added a further group to that of the hormone weedkillers—in the discovery of which they led the van. Among biological chemicals, development has often followed the chance discovery of some useful property, the mode of action, rarely predictable, being elucidated—or not—after that event. As for the new compounds, a penetrating insight regarding their action has already been established.
