Abstract
The history of the discovery of the factors responsible for this disorder in apples unrolls like that of a detective story. Over a long period little progress was made in understanding the trouble. Some early clues were not followed up and several false ones delayed progress; but success came in the end, and may well provide a lead for the correction in other crops of many similar imperfections possibly caused by mineral imbalance.
