Abstract
The economic production of beef under intensive as under extensive conditions poses problems that are more complex than those encountered in dairying, for food conversion efficiencies are lower than those for milk, and the animals must be ready for the market at favourable times. Hence no simple solution can be offered. Critical appraisal of alternatives at every stage must be undertaken, and is the theme of this article.
