In a changing industry, with new marketing outlets alongside traditional ones, genetic improvement of the pig, especially with a view to carcass improvement, has become economically desirable. Methods of performance testing and progeny testing are described and critically discussed. To secure rapid progress, integration of production stages by co-operative groups is necessary, and is in fact beginning to appear.
