Abstract
Although hypomagnesaemic tetany has been studied as a clinical disease since 1929 and much work is in progress, knowledge is meagre concerning the physiological role of magnesium in the dairy cow and the tetanic syndrome. Nevertheless, since the trouble is basically nutritional, enlightened fertilizer practice and animal management can together largely reduce the risk of loss in the commercial dairy herd.
