Problems in improving crop yields in the tropics are more complex than has hitherto been recognized, and different techniques from those used in temperate regions are needed to deal with them. Recent experiments show that deficiencies of minor elements in certain areas may account for the disappointing results given by fertilizers and the defective functioning of legumes, thus preventing the establishment of stable systems of farming.
