Numerous trials have shown that 1:1′-ethylene-2:2′-dipyridylium dibromide is a potent systemic herbicide having several useful properties. In particular, it enters foliage within a few minutes of contact, so that rain falling after this period does not affect its toxic action, and it is rapidly inactivated when applied to the soil. Potential uses include potato haulm destruction and crop desiccation as well as general weedkilling.
