Research in recent years has added much to our knowledge of the processes of digestion in ruminants, and this paper shows what has been achieved, with emphasis on physical aspects of rumen function and effects on the physiological economy of the cow. Study of the subject is the best approach to such problems as improved utilization of foods or control of metabolic disorders, and may lead to important advances in animal husbandry.
