Lack of reliable information on the incidence and effects of diseases of farm animals makes it difficult to assess the magnitude of any particular problem and the amount of research to devote to its solution. The remedy is to establish systems for collecting and analysing data on a national scale. In Britain survey work begun in 1950 is already providing valuable material on the relative importance of infections in our dairy herds.
