Abstract
The following triptych of articles on the band curriculum has penetrating implications for choral conductors and orchestral directors as well as bandsmen. The terms “chorus” and “orchestra” could easily be substituted for “band” in many of the statements that follow, for directors of all these groups are equally vulnerable to many of the problems voiced here and may welcome some of the solutions. Nevertheless, it is the band that has traditionally held a position of prominence in the curriculum, and as such it has often been looked upon as the measure of music education. Perhaps it is left to the band once again to lead music education to another level of refinement, since its area is a principal focus of interest and concern.—Ed.
