In this survey there will no doubt arise errors of omission and inevitably there will be an element of subjectivity. The purpose, however, is to present an up to date picture of the general situation as it obtains in this particular, important yet little known area of forensic science. Comments should be taken as appertaining to the United Kingdom although they may well apply more widely.
