The etymological problems of ‘dangerousness’ are considered. The fact that the concept is changing is pointed out, while some factors related to violent offenders are enumerated. The question of what sort of man serves a long sentence and the effect a long sentence has upon a man is raised, with particular emphasis upon groups of men and the idea of deterioration. Stress is placed upon the need for further research.
