The observance of a substance, which was chemically similar to salicylic acid, in urine samples submitted for alcohol determination led to an investigation of the urinary metabolites arising from the ingestion of aspirin.
Three metabolites were isolated and identified as salicyluric, gentisic and salicylic acids. As an additional confirmation of salicyluric acid, the main metabolite, a synthetic sample of this substance was prepared from aspirin and glycine.
