A biological survey often reveals the degree and type ot river pollution. High temperatures, high turbidity and toxic chemicals cause the disappearance of many members of the normal flora and fauna. Organic wastes, e.g., sewage, support large numbers of organisms which cause decay and there is a succession downstream of special pollution communities of animals usually found in stagnant, still waters.
