Abstract
The comparison of petrols is important in cases of larceny from parked vehicles and from bulk supplies. In the past it was rarely possible to identify the brand of petrol. This article shows that the use of infra-red techniques allows the immediate identification of a petrol to a Commercial, Premium or Super grade. In the case of the Premium and Super grades a petrol can be accurately identified; a Commercial grade petrol may be identified or limited to one of two possibilities. The effects on spectra of mixtures of petrols is discussed.
