Abstract
The validity of the writer's proprioceptive impression that the lengthening of laterals and nasals is distinctive in Ceylon Tamil was checked with the help of palatograms. The test items consisted of words in which single and double laterals and nasals occur. In the case of palatograms of words containing single consonants, there was only just a suggestion of a wipe-off and most of the marking medium was left intact. But in the case of words containing double consonants, the palatograms revealed a dearer and more marked wipe-off than in the previous cases. Thus it can be shown that during the articulation of double nasals and laterals, the tongue touches the area of contact more firmly and for a longer duration the articulation of single nasals and laterials.
