The interpretation of on-off time patterns in speech is not simple. It is feasible to argue that such patterns may serve to identify speech encoding units. An explanation in terms of random processes is best regarded as a null hypothesis. It is not in itself sufficient grounds for rejecting an encoding processes interpretation.
