Word meanings for high socio-economic status children were compared to those for low socio-economic status children from each of grades 3, 6 and 9. Only at grade 3 and 6 was there a significantly greater tendency for low socio-economic status children to operate more on a sensorimotor affective and perceptual level of meaning rather than a conceptual level, when compared to high socio-economic status children.
