Abstract
The responses of 64 children to a picture articulation test of 18 consonants in the initial, medial, and final positions were analysed. A principal components analysis was performed and components rotated to simple structure. The analysis yielded 13 factors which are interpretable in terms of the standard consonant classification system but which suggest modifications in the system.
