Abstract

The Spanish Association for Laboratory Animal Science (SECAL) and the University of Alcalá (Madrid) have co-edited and funded again a text-book for education and training purposes on laboratory animal science (LAS). The new book is titled “Science and Technology on Animal Research”.
After the huge diffusion of its previous text-book, Science and technology of laboratory animal, with more than 10,000 copies sold worldwide, its directors, Dr. JM Zúñiga from the University of Granada and Dr. JM Orellana from the University of Alcalá (Madrid), launch a new and more ambitious project, the publication of the first interactive LAS text-book on e-learning platform format with URL access.
Its innovative format allows the steady contents updating and the translation from Spanish into other languages.
One hundred and thirty-eight experts (73 women and 65 men) have worked for almost six years on the creation of 64 chapters containing more than 3,000 pages and 500 complementary resources linked on the platform (scientific articles, pictures, videos, tables and additional notes) structured like the training modules of the Framework Document for Education and Training of the European Directive 2010/63/EU on animal experimentation and they cover the required learning outcomes for all established Functions by the Directive, so the book becomes an essential tool, not only for the organization of training courses, but also for scientific consultation during the research on animals.
The SECAL and the University of Alcalá funding has allowed that the recommended retail price is low enough to be used for training courses.
