Abstract

New Diplomates
The College welcomes seven new Diplomates: Arianna Aricò, Cristian Berce, Inga Brüsch, Regina Rumpel, Rebecca Sandgren, Fabrizio Scorrano and Emrah Yatkin.
There are several routes of entry into ECLAM. The standard residency training route is available in four training centres: Spain, Germany, Scandinavia and Switzerland/Southern Germany. As an alternative, vets may develop their own training program tailored to their specific needs as an alternate route residency, under the guidance of a Diplomate. We also encourage those with significant experience in the field to apply as Internationally Recognised Experts. Finally, any certified Diplomate of an IACLAM member College may become an ECLAM Diplomate. See our website for information: https://eclam.eu
One day symposium “We have to talk about rodent surgery”
Sunday, 12 June 2022 – in Marseille in advance of the FELASA meeting
Surgery is an integral part of many experimental studies in rodents. Optimal care, state-of-the-art protocols and minimally-invasive aseptic surgical technique are prerequisites to achieve surgical success and best possible animal welfare outcomes. We all agree that good surgical practice can improve the animal’s postoperative recovery, the outcome of the study and the validity of its results. However, it is challenging to implement all these diverse aspects of good surgical practice during experimental rodent surgery. Further considerations, such as batch surgeries, the use of genetically modified or immunocompromised animals, the need for a specific (micro)surgical set up due to the animals’ small size (e.g. surgical microscope, stereotaxic instrument) and dedicated instruments, as well as an often limited number of surgical assistants, must be taken into account.
This symposium aims to cover the diverse aspects of rodent surgery by introducing and discussing current knowledge, available techniques and practical approaches for good surgical practice, such as aseptic working techniques, organisation of workflows, surgical team and infrastructure, which anaesthetics and/or analgesics to use, devices, workflows and scoring schemes for peri- and postoperative monitoring and care.
This symposium will be organised and held in cooperation with:
