Abstract
Las circunstancias actuales están haciendo que se agudice la imaginación y que se obtenga el mayor provecho de la tecnología incluso en aspectos donde nunca antes nos lo habíamos planteado. Los congresos son foros donde muchas personas de un sector intercambian información, novedades y experiencias, y también le ponen cara a relaciones que se han mantenido por asuntos laborales o comerciales a través del teléfono o del correo electrónico, lo que en un ambiente distendido permite, en ocasiones, crear vínculos, colaboraciones o incluso amistades.
Este año por la Covid no hemos tenido esa posibilidad, que muchos echamos de menos, pero hasta que volvamos a la normalidad, hay personas que despiertan su ingenio y son capaces de recrear todo un congreso internacional de forma virtual al cien por cien. Un congreso con más de 20 ponentes de gran relevancia científica, donde se trataron temas de actualidad y donde se pudieron presentar posters y comunicaciones. Incluso se contó con dos salas virtuales de stands, con más de 30 expositores, donde estuvieron las principales casas comerciales del sector para presentar sus productos y novedades, y que los inscritos pudimos visitar, consultarles e incluso participar algunos juegos y rifas. Un congreso que reunió a más de 1300 profesionales de más de 15 países. Uno de los stands más visitados fue el de SECAL, con 1032 visitas. Esta participación nos ha servido como sociedad para darnos a conocer a profesionales de muchos países con los que compartimos inquietudes y, con muchos de ellos, idioma. En nuestro estand se pudo ver un video de la presidenta de SECAL dando la bienvenida a los visitantes e informándoles sobre nuestra sociedad, y en otros paneles se informaba sobre cursos de formación u otro tipo de actividades de la sociedad. Los miembros de la junta directiva hicimos turnos para recibir, informar y agradecer a cada uno de los visitantes su atención, a través del chat. Nos consultaron muchas cosas y a muchos de ellos les escribimos posteriormente ampliando esas respuestas. Las principales consultas fueron sobre las ventajas de hacerse socio y sobre cursos de formación.
Con este tipo de eventos se están abriendo nuevas puertas, y dado el éxito de la convocatoria, pensamos que van a seguir abiertas como otra opción para nuevos encuentros. Con ellos los coste de los viajes desaparecen, se reducen los gastos para los expositores que no tienen que llevar físicamente sus mercancías ni montar stands, y se reduce también el impacto sobre el medio ambiente. Permiten que muchas personas interesadas en asistir, y que por diversas circunstancias no podrían hacerlo de forma física, lo hagan, enriqueciendo el congresos con sus opiniones y puntos de vista, lo que supone un beneficio para todos.
Este congreso se llamó ExpoBioteriosVirtual, tuvo lugar los días 16 y 17 de octubre de 2020, y fue, simplemente, espectacular.
Por otro lado y siguiendo con la “nueva normalidad” esta Sociedad, SECAL, ha desarrollado su Jornada Científica el día 16 de diciembre a través de una plataforma web. Patrocinada por Laboratory Animals Limited y con un gran éxito de asistencia con más de 533 inscritos, su inauguración corrió a cargo del Dr. José María Orellana en representación de LAL. A continuación se desarrollaron ponencias sobre los siguientes temas: “Las expresiones faciales y su relación con el bienestar de los animales” por D. Garikoitz Azkona, “Uso de la escala de expresión facial de dolor en ratón en ensayos de toxicidad preliminar” por Dña. Violeta Solís, y “Técnicas de Imagen Molecular en Investigación Oncológica” por la Dra. Francisca Mulero. Fueron unas charlas muy interesantes que suscitaron gran interés por parte de los asistentes, que participaron de forma activa con sus preguntas y comentarios de agradecimiento. Una vez más queda reflejado el gran interés de los profesionales del sector a disponer de formación e información sobre los temas que afectan a nuestro trabajo para poder ser mejores cada día. La investigación científica y el bienestar animal, nuestros principales objetivos.

SECAL in ExpoBioteriosVirtual
Current circumstances have sharpened our creative thinking skills and have boosted our command of technologies even in aspects we have never previously considered. Congresses are forums where many people from a sector meet, exchange information, news and experiences, and put a face to relationships that have been maintained for business reasons through telephone calls or by email, and under a relaxed atmosphere often allow links, collaborations or even friendship to be created.
This year, due to the Covid pandemic, we have not had that possibility, which many of us have missed, but until we return to normality, there are people who awaken their ingenuity and are able to recreate an entire international congress virtually. In this ExpoBioteriosVirtual Congress there were more than 20 speakers of great scientific relevance, where current topics were discussed and where posters and communications could be presented. There were even two virtual exhibitions areas, with more than 30 stands. In them, the main commercial companies of the sector offered their products and new items, which those who were registered could visit, ask questions to and even take part in games and raffles. This Congress brought together more than 1,300 professionals from more than 15 countries. SECAL was one of the most visited stands, with 1032 visits. This participation has helped us as an association to introduce ourselves to professionals from many countries, with whom we could share concerns and, with many of them, also in the same language. At our stand, visitors could watch a video where SECAL’s president welcomed them and informed them about our association. There were also several screens providing information about training courses and other activities of the association. SECAL board members took turns through the chat to welcome, inform and thank each of the visitors for their attention. They asked us many questions live, and we also wrote later to many of them expanding on those answers. The main inquiries were about the benefits of becoming a member and about the training courses.
This type of event opens new doors and, given the success of the call, we think that they will remain open as a valid option for future meetings. With virtual meetings, the costs of travel disappear, the expenses for exhibitors who do not have to physically carry their goods or set up stands are significantly reduced, and the impact on the environment is also reduced. It is also a way to allow interested people to attend, when for different reasons this would not otherwise be possible, enriching the congress with their opinions and points of view, which is a benefit for all.
This congress was ExpoBioteriosVirtual and took place on October 16 and 17, 2020. It was simply spectacular.
On the other hand, and continuing with the “new normality”, SECAL developed through a web platform its Annual Scientific Conference on December 16, 2020, sponsored by Laboratory Animals Limited (LAL).
It has been a great success with more than 533 people registered. The opening lecture was given by Dr. José María Orellana on behalf of LAL.
The following talks were on: “Facial expressions and their relationship with animal welfare” by Dr. Garikoitz Azkona; “Use of the facial expression scale of pain in mice in preliminary toxicity tests” by Dr. Violeta Solís; and “Molecular Imaging Techniques in Oncology Research” by Dr. Francisca Mulero. All of them were very interesting talks and aroused great interest in all the attendees who participated actively with their questions and comments of appreciation.
It is reflected once again in the great interest that the professionals in this sector have in obtaining continuous education courses, training, and information on the subjects related to our field, to improve each day. Scientific research and animal welfare are our main objectives.
